Wyoming Bison Co
A multigenerational bison ranching operation on 10,000 acres of open Wyoming high plains — the source herd behind every Genesee bar.
Wyoming Bison Co has operated on the same high-plains land outside Sheridan since 1978. The Donaldson family — now in its third generation — runs a closed herd of approximately 1,200 bison, none of which have ever touched a feedlot. The animals graze on native grasses year-round, moving across pasture rotations that closely mimic the historical migration patterns of the species.
Will Carr first visited in January 2026 and spent three days on the property before signing the supply agreement. What struck him was the herd health documentation: 100% grass-finished, no added hormones, USDA Process Verified. The cold-chain handoff from on-site USDA-inspected harvest to the co-packer takes fewer than 48 hours from liveweight to frozen primals.
The Donaldsons manage an active soil-health program. Every pasture rotation is tracked for soil carbon, and the operation participates in a Marin Carbon Project protocol for regenerative grazing verification. As of Q1 2026, 95% of the total grazed acreage qualifies as regeneratively managed under that standard.
